So it’s time! Your house has sold, the contracts are signed, and you can start packing everything up. The first thing we all think about is going out and buying as many boxes as we can manage. The fact is you don’t have to do this. There are plenty of places you can get boxes without paying a penny. Think about all those retail outlets that “recycle” packaging every single day, I’ll bet they’d be glad to unload some of it on to you.
The only thing you should make sure of is that they’re strong enough to hold what you need to pack. Which brings me to your breakables, bubble-wrap! We all love bubble-wrap, especially when we’re finished with it, and you can set about having a “bubble pop” party! The thing is it’s not that cheap to buy. As efficient as it is, not all of us have a moving budget which means we can set aside some cash to splash out on this little packing luxury.
Instead, think about all those blankets you’ve got to pack away. You might think they’ll need their own boxes, and they will, but there isn’t any reason why you can’t wrap a few breakables in them. You only have to label the box “living room ornaments, with bedroom blankets”. You’ll still know what’s inside.
The same can be said of all sorts of other things you have around the home. Cushions provide great protection, and I’ve used duvets in the past as well. In fact, just using the vast amount of bedding, blankets, and towels I’ve amassed over the years has probably save me hundreds on bubble-wrap.
Of course, there are some things you can’t “scrimp” on. Packing tape is something you will need, and plenty of it, but there are websites that will give you discounts if you bulk buy, so shop around. The other thing you could do is ask your friends and family. Some of them might work at places where they can lay their hands on packing materials, but don’t let them get into trouble as a result....no stealing now!
